Coffee Maker Station publishes buying guides and troubleshooting references for home coffee equipment. This page explains exactly how we research and write those guides — including what we do not do — so you can judge how much weight to give our recommendations.
What we actually do
Every guide is built from documented, checkable sources rather than personal testing. For each product we cover, we work through:
- Manufacturer specifications. Brew capacity, reservoir volume, wattage, dimensions, pressure rating, burr type, grinder adjustment range, and materials — read from the current spec sheet or user manual, not from a retailer’s marketing copy.
- Documented feature behaviour. Whether a warming plate is adjustable and for how long, whether a milk system is automatic or manual, whether a filter basket is dishwasher safe, and whether the water tank is removable.
- Ownership and maintenance requirements. Descaling frequency, filter replacement intervals, proprietary pod or filter lock-in, and the parts that commonly need replacing.
- Published pricing and availability. We record the price band a product occupies and whether it is consistently stocked, because a recommendation is only useful if you can buy the thing.
- Published buyer feedback. We read aggregated review volume and recurring complaints to identify failure patterns that specifications alone cannot reveal — for example, a reservoir that cracks, or a grinder that retains stale grounds.
What we do not do
We did not conduct physical testing. No machine on this site has been purchased, brewed with, measured, listened to, or taken apart by our team. That means:
- We do not claim a machine brews better coffee. We report what its specifications and documented design imply.
- We do not report noise levels, brew temperatures, extraction yields, or brew speeds from our own instruments, because we have not measured them.
- We do not claim durability. Where we mention reliability, it is either a manufacturer claim clearly attributed as such, or a pattern visible in aggregated buyer feedback.
- We do not use photographs taken in our own kitchen. Images on this site are editorial illustrations or manufacturer-supplied product images.
Where a manufacturer’s performance language appears — “barista-quality”, “café-style”, “professional-grade” — we treat it as a claim, not a verified result, and we say so.
How we rank and choose what to include
Guides are organised around a decision a reader is actually trying to make — capacity, counter footprint, budget band, or brewing method — rather than around a brand’s product line. Within a guide, ordering reflects how well each product satisfies that specific brief according to its specifications, weighted toward the constraints that most often cause regret: an undersized reservoir, a non-removable tank, a grinder with too narrow an adjustment range, or consumables that lock you into one supplier.
We include products across price bands rather than only premium models, and we say plainly when a cheaper option covers the same practical brief. We also say when a product is not worth the extra cost for a given use, which is often the more useful judgement.
Prices, availability, and affiliate links
Coffee Maker Station earns commissions from qualifying purchases made through links on this site, at no additional cost to you. This is how the site is funded. Commission never determines whether a product is included, how it is ordered, or what we say about it — and the specifications we cite are the same ones you can verify yourself.
Prices and stock change constantly. A price quoted in a guide reflects the band a product occupied when the page was last reviewed, not a live quote. Always confirm the current price and availability on the retailer’s page before buying.
Updates and corrections
Guides are revised when a manufacturer changes a specification, discontinues a model, or when reader feedback identifies something we got wrong. Year references in titles indicate the revision cycle, not a claim that every figure was re-verified that month. If you spot an error — a specification that no longer matches the manufacturer’s documentation, or a product listed as available when it has been discontinued — please tell us and we will correct it.
Editorial independence
We do not accept payment for placement, and no manufacturer or retailer has editorial input into our guides. Our editorial policy sets out the standards we hold ourselves to; our affiliate disclosure explains the commercial relationship in full.
